Live forecasts update automatically; written guidance last reviewed 16 June 2026 by the Toronto Post Weather Desk. Data from Environment and Climate Change Canada and other national met services via Open-Meteo.
The live forecast above shows a persistent Arctic ridge delivering below-normal temperatures across most of British Columbia and Alberta through mid‑January, with daytime highs in the –12°C to –22°C range for Edmonton and Calgary, while coastal BC sees near‑normal values around 2°C to 6°C.
How cold will it get in BC and Alberta this winter?
The core of the coldest air will sit over Alberta and interior BC, where overnight lows can drop to –30°C or lower in the Peace River region and near Jasper. The Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland will stay milder but still see several nights below freezing, with occasional outflow winds making it feel like –10°C.
When should we expect the heaviest snow?
Two to three significant snow events are probable across southern BC ski resorts and the Alberta foothills between mid‑January and early February, with accumulations of 20–40 cm possible in a single storm. The Okanagan Connector and the Coquihalla Highway should plan for extended closures during these passages.
Will the Pineapple Express affect BC this winter?
A few weak atmospheric‑river events are possible in late January, bringing rain to Vancouver and heavy snow above 1,200 metres. The pattern does not favour a prolonged Pineapple Express like 2021.
Is a polar vortex event expected for Alberta?
Yes, a lobe of the polar vortex is projected to sink into northern Alberta around the last week of January, pushing wind chill values to –40°C in Edmonton and Fort McMurray for 2–3 days.
How reliable are seasonal forecasts for this region?
Environment and Climate Change Canada gives medium confidence (55–65% probability) for below‑normal temperatures in Alberta and near‑normal in coastal BC. Snowfall amounts are harder to pin down more than 10 days ahead.
